Should You Be Concerned With Johnny Football?

The Heisman winner Johnny Manziel has definitely made headlines in ways many don’t like to see. It is obvious that Johnny Football is in the news for all the wrong reasons. Sure people are over reacting about the court side seats at basketball games or simply living the life of a high profile college athlete, but there lies the problem, he is a college athlete not a professional that makes millions. There are rules in the NCAA that are supposed to support amateurism and keep them from living that high profile life as a college student.

Even with all that aside, he still is messing up. Starting even back in January after he won the Cotton Bowl in Dallas he was seen in a Dallas nightclub drinking a bottle of Dom Perignon even though he is only 20. He plead guilty on Monday to a charge of failing to identify and received a fine of $2000. He failed to properly identify himself when being questioned after being involved in a late-night bar fight. The two other charges that night, possessing a fake driver’s license and disorderly conduct, were both dismissed.

The icing on the cake was when a report went out earlier this week saying that after failing to attend meetings at the Manning Quarterback Academy, he left due to a claimed illness that much of the media claims it was a hangover. Johnny Football had been invited by the royal family of football to learn from them and to leave suspicion that his behavior lead to him leaving early is both an embarrassment and a missed opportunity. For example for us normal people, if you were invited to dinner at the White House, you don’t go out and get drunk the night before.

These little glimpses of what his social life is definitely raise concerns of what is really going on behind the curtains. So many people are going out of their way to shut the door on those glimpses; it will be interesting to see what happens when those people aren’t there.

Should you be concerned about what is happening around Manziel? Well that depends, if you are an Aggies fan definitely. There is a lot of attention being shined down on you Heisman winner’s social life but not so much on the holes you have in the rest of the team. 5 of the front 7 in A&M’s defense are gone, when they combined for 58% of tackles and 69% of sacks last year, including Damontre Moore who accounted for 21 of the Aggies 75 TFLs. Julien Obioha will be returning from injury and Kirby Ennis will miss the spring due to a suspension. On top of that projected starting defensive backs Deshazor Everett and Floyd Raven have been suspended for the year. It isn’t looking too good for Texas A&M fans.

On the other side, the rest of the SEC West is sitting back and watching Johnny Football mess up over and over again. If I was Manziel I would look out, because the defenses he will be facing will be coming after him, especially South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney.

If you worry about his draft stock for next year, you shouldn’t be. Johnny Manziel doesn’t possess many NFL QB skills and will be hard to have him picked to be a future franchise player like RGIII and Russel Wilson.

Let’s just hope Johnny can try to lay low for a while and wait out the rest of the off-season and hopefully prove me wrong this season.
